Developing Algebraic Thinking

A course for increasing mathematical content knowledge for upper elementary and middle-school teachers as well as special education and itinerant teachers.

Course Content:
The course provides an opportunity for practicing teachers to increase the breadth and depth of their current content knowledge in mathematics. The main focus of this course, Developing Algebraic Thinking, is growth in the use of algebraic reasoning, including, but
not limited to, patterns, proportional reasoning, use of multiple representations, and performing regressions.

Participants will take part in discussions, individual and group activities, and computer work.

Grades: 5 – 8 (Upper elementary and middle school teachers and special education plus itinerant teachers)

Act 48 Status: Eligible

This course will be offered over a one-week intensive time frame, six hours of instruction per day, for a total of 30 face-to-face hours. Participants are also required to spend an additional 15 hours outside of class to complete the remaining coursework.

Additional notes:
Instruction in the use of online courseware is included. Participants are not expected to have experience with C advanced computer software. Participants must have Internet access. This course requires the use of a graphing calculator. one will be provided for use during the course. Three college credit hours may be available to participants.
